Learning About COVID-19

Covid-19 is the infectious disease that is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2). Both the virus and the disease were first discovered in Wuhan, China in 2019 when multiple patients presented with what seemed to be a new strain of pneumonia.

Because SARS-CoV-2 and Covid-19 are new, scientists and medical professionals are still trying to learn everything they can in an effort to develop both a reliable vaccine and treatment. So, it is important for everyone to make use of the information available to stay safe and protect the people around them.

What do we know about Covid-19?

Most cases of transmission are from close contact with an infected individual, so it is important to practice social distancing, maintaining a distance of at least 1 meter or 3 feet as suggested by the World Health Organization (WHO) or even 2 meters as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), especially because some people may be positive for SARS-CoV-2 but have no symptoms.

Use of a face mask is highly encouraged. The most common way for the virus to get from an infected individual to another person is in tiny droplets that are spread through the air when that person coughs, sneezes, or speak, and it enters the system of an uninfected individual through their mouth, nose, or eyes. This is also why everyone should wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, as often as possible, especially after touching anything and before touching the face. If soap and water is unavailable, then rubbing hands with 70% alcohol for at least 20 seconds is the next best option.

The most common symptoms are a fever and respiratory issues, such as cough and difficulty breathing. But it also may also present with loss of sense of smell or taste and diarrhea. Symptoms may take up to 14 days to start to show after a person is infected by the virus.

The best defense against any virus is a strong immune system, so get plenty of rest, eat healthy food, stay hydrated, and take your vitamins. If you start to feel sick, stay home. If you experience difficulty in breathing, contact your doctor.
